Snowboarding in and around Innsbruck – the choice is between Axamer Lizum and Nordpark
The annual air and style competition really put Innsbruck on the world snowboard map. Following safety concerns at the events it has now moved north. There still remains a highly active snowboarding scene, supplemented by the many students that flock to Innsbruck University for lifestyle as well as education.

Snowboarding in the park
The two significant terrain parks exist at Axamer Lizum and Nordpark. Both resorts also offer extensive off-piste terrain. The combination of jumps and powder can deliver a phenomenal experience when the conditions are favourable in either resort. Of the two terrain parks then Nordpark has the distinct advantage that it is served by a chairlift, the terrain park at Axamer Lizum is served by the dreaded T bar or by foot, whichever is preferred. It is rumoured that the Stubai Glacier is soon to get its long overdue terrain park.
Snowboarding off-piste in Innsbruck
The off-piste at Nordpark is more dramatic and extremely steep. It is something of a battle to take the cable cars up and on display is the very worst of manners; however the routes down can make it all worthwhile. The off-piste snowboard terrain at Axamer Lizum is more extensive by comparison and gentler. It is served by more lifts than the single cable car at Nordpark which makes it less stressful and the powder snow lasts considerably longer given that it is far bigger terrain, has a lot of tree coverage and is less exposed to the sun. On a powder day you can see Innsbruck locals on their mobile phones desperately calling contacts for local snow updates, torn between the Nordpark, north of the city and Axamer Lizum to the south. Save the call charges, on a powder day it is a win, win situation.
