For those new to the sport there are the hugely popular slopes of Mutters where, until the winter of 2005/06 the lifts had been removed and it was a Mecca for local ski tourers. The climb is gentle and is serviced by two mountain huts at the top of the tour. With the development of the lift system, there were fears that ski touring there would be marginalised but the ski area actively encourages them to continue skiing there. The route up is gentle, involves no steep traverses and the atmosphere amongst the ski tourers is good.

The opportunities are almost endless. Remote mountains and those close to Innsbruck are all dotted with ski tourers and ski touring tracks and often end at a mountain hut. Whilst lift accessed skiing still dominates, especially amongst visitors, ski touring has a huge following amongst the residents of Innsbruck.
