the skiing

The ski area is sunny, mostly tree lined but for the top dome and best suited to intermediates. The runs through the trees are fascinating and provide great changing gradients and relief. The ski area is accessed from the resort by cable car which passes over the fields and beginners ski area as well as the Olympic bob sleigh course. More advanced skiing terrain can be found at the peak and easier ski terrain toward the bottom of the mountain.

On-piste: The most challenging terrain is found on the top of the Patscherkofel, accessed by a historic chairlift, although the views are so good, the speed of the chair is of little concern. Below the top steep that leads back down the tree line, the runs are a mix of red and blues.

Off-piste: There is significant avalanche danger on the eastern side of the peak but it is well-marked. The best off-piste ski terrain is further down through the trees. Take a run through the trees down to Patsch, a local village and you can have a beer with Bode, Bode Miller has his European base there.

where to stay

Igls in contrast to Innsbruck is a traditional ski resort with hotels, amenities and skiing right to the village. The ski resort is small but attractive with the traditional village church being the central focus. Around are hotels and a few bars and cafes. The ski resort is pretty quiet and well suited to families. Other accommodation exists in nearby villages although they offer a pretty similar product, just further from the lift station. Innsbruck offers a significant difference in terms of size and vibrancy as a base for a ski holiday but without the undoubted alpine charm of Igls.

after dark / après ski

The ski resort of Igls is a pretty quiet place and good for families. Those wanting action after dark should head down into Innsbruck in the valley below. A tram runs down the mountain and so does a regular bus service. There is a toboggan run down to Igls, or you can try the real thing in the Olympic bobsleigh course, alternatively watch form the safety of track-side.
